Organisations that compete in complex and tumultuous economies still believe that quality remains an important aspect of competitiveness. The conditions for managing quality, however, grow more difficult as organisations strive to meet customer and societal requirements in a fast, global and demanding environment while at the same time delivering value to shareholders. Yet the quest for quality may be nothing short of lip-service if the ability, capability, effectiveness and efficiency of the quality manager is not monitored.
Kusile and Medupi power stations continue to come under fire as poorly managed and ill-designed, remaining years behind completion dates amidst drastically rising costs that now stand at R300-billion, by conservative estimates. Despite being the most expensive projects in the world, these stations are reportedly failing in reliability, achieving a 40% rate at best.

The Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL) is an academic college within the University of South Africa (Unisa).
In 1965, following the advice and active support of senior South African business leaders, Unisa decided to introduce a Master of Business Leadership (MBL). The success of this programme, coupled with the unique characteristics associated with a multidisciplinary degree led, in 1969, to the establishment of the SBL as an autonomous body within the university. As its name and that of its flagship programme (the MBL) indicate, the emphasis from the start has been on leadership development as opposed to administration.
Regarded as one of the top business schools in South Africa, the SBL has produced more than a third of all the MBL/MBA degrees awarded by South African universities since its inception.
Driven by a philosophy of innovation, social responsibility, ethical engagement and global connectedness, the success of the SBL’s approach is demonstrated daily by achievements of the people and organisations who have participated in their programmes. Prof Raphael Mpofu is the Acting Executive Dean of the Graduate School of Business Leadership at the University of South Africa. His research interests are in the fields of corporate banking, corporate finance, emerging markets, knowledge management and economic development. He has also been extensively involved in management development across Southern Africa and has worked and consulted in a number of JSE/FTSE top listed companies.
